One of the highlights of my career with Calvin Klein was being able to work with Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine. She’s every bit as fabulous as the press and Hollywood movies have made her out to be. But what makes her so fabulous isn’t her trademark pageboy haircut, dark sunglasses, and finely honed fashion instincts; it’s her incredible dedication to supporting the careers of young, up-and-coming designers. With a nod of her head, she can catapult designers from obscurity to fame and fortune. She is, without a doubt, a force to be reckoned with.
In my opinion, she is one of the most powerful people, if not the most powerful person, in fashion. Since she took the helm of Vogue in 1988, she has set trends, killed trends, and run one of the most consistently profitable magazines in the world. (Mind you, she did this all during an otherwise tumultuous economic time in the publishing world.) More than all of this, she is responsible for countless career success stories. Many designers owe their success, in large part, to the support Wintour gave them—either directly (through oneon-one mentorship) or indirectly (through endorsements and features in her magazine, which one could argue, is as direct as it gets).
And though she is probably one of the busiest leaders in fashion, she still— remarkably—finds time to be a leading philanthropist. As a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she is responsible for organizing the now world-famous Met Ball, and she raised millions of dollars for the museum’s Costume Institute while she was at it. And what a great time those balls were!
Funny side story: One of my favorite memories is of running into Brooke Shields at the Met Ball. She made Calvin Klein Jeans famous in the 1980s when she was the spokesmodel for the brand and spoke the iconic tagline, “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvin’s? Nothing.” That night at the Met Ball, she and I happened to be standing in front of a pair of the Calvin’s she wore as the spokesmodel. I always get a kick out of this memory—the CEO, the former spokesmodel, and Calvin’s jeans all right there in one room! I’ll never forget what Brooke Shields said to me, either. She leaned over and said she could still fit into the jeans! And boy did I believe her. She looked fantastic. Calvin always knew what he was doing. She was the brand for life!
Because of those balls, I not only ran into the likes of Brooke Shields, I also met all sorts of celebrities, business greats, and new designers.
In addition to her philanthropy, Anna also founded the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fund to encourage, support, and mentor unknown fashion designers. Now known as the Oscars of Fashion, it presents awards to leading designers each year and recognizes their contributions to the fashion world. Over the years, some of the award winners and celebrated designers have been Calvin Klein
